On the Web - Are you looking to do something a little different this weekend? How about meeting snakes and other creepy-crawlies up close and talking to some of Florida’s foremost reptile experts?
Members of the Fort Myers-based Calusa Herpetological Society want you will make plans to join them this weekend at the Southwest Florida Reptile Expo. This event will showcase local reptile breeders and give the public the opportunity to see live reptiles up close as well as buy pets, supplies, T-shirts, and jewelry.
CHS president Elaine Davis hopes the event will further the group’s mission statement, which states that the society is “dedicated to education, conservation, and enjoyment of reptiles and amphibians.” You can drop by Davis’s Estero Reptiles table at the show to touch a snake if you so wish. “A lot of people are afraid, because they’ve been taught that they should fear snakes,” says Davis. “It’s always fun to see people overcome that and actually hold a snake for the first time.” She adds, “They’re usually surprised at how calm and easy to handle they are.”
Biologists and Alligator Wrestlers Christopher Gillette and Ashley Lawrence of “Gator Boys” are featured guests of this weekend’s show. Daniel Parker of Sunshine Serpents will showcase “Max,” a giant alligator snapping turtle. Admission to the event is only $5.00. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free.
The Southwest Florida Reptile Expo will be held at the Bonita Springs/Estero Elks Lodge at 3231 Coconut Rd Bonita Springs, FL 34134. The Expo will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 19 and 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 20, 2016. For more information see www.calusaherp.org.
