The Reptile Report - Over the years, I have worked with a number of terrestrial gecko species. My favorite of these is the helmeted gecko of Northern Africa. They have a very unique look and make up for their small size with a big personality. Until recently these geckos have been labeled asGeckonia chazalia, but they have recently been reclassified as Tarentola chazalia. They get their common name, “helmeted gecko”, from a row of enlarged scales lining the back of the head. This gives the shape and appearance of a “helmet”.
