The Reptile Report - Personalities- A Media Resource
My name is Tyler Stewart and I’ve been keeping reptiles since I was about 8 years old. Keeping (and successfully producing) a few Mojave desert lizard species first, I got a green iguana at the age of 10 and have kept reptiles ever since. I moved into chameleons in 1999, and started business in 2002 under the name “Bluebeast Reptile” breeding panther, jacksons and veiled chameleons. In 2007, I began a transition into only tortoises. We have kept just tortoises since about 2008, and in early 2010, we switched over to the business name of “Tortoise Supply“. Our collection is about 15 species with many more subspecies, but most of our focus is on desert species such as greek, hermanns, russian, sulcata, star, radiated and leopard tortoises. We currently keep around 350 adult tortoises here in Las Vegas, with expansion plans in a new facility in 2014-2015.
With a good friend of mine, I also run the Las Vegas Reptile Expo which we have done twice a year since 2010, bringing reptile vendors and breeders together with customers here in Las Vegas.
I went to college at Utah Valley University and studied Arts & Visual Communications as well as Construction Management. By collaborating with neighbors in my apartment complex, I was able to hide my chameleons from the monthly apartment inspections they would do in our pet-free college apartments. It also proved to be a good way to figure out which girlfriends were “reptile-friendly” or not. Since I was 16, I have worked at a commercial concrete company where I still work full time today as an estimator.
I have written several tortoise care sheets for Reptiles Magazine’s website, ReptileChannel.com. I have also done several phone/radio interviews regarding tortoises and tortoise keeping, and recently was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about tortoises for their Superbowl article about Colin Kaepernick who apparently keeps a large sulcata tortoise. In person we have done several demonstrations for schools, boy scout groups, reptile clubs and have provided “display” tortoises at multiple reptile conventions and expos.
I currently live in Las Vegas, NV with my amazing wife Sarah (she’s the pretty face I usually put in front of the camera when needed), and our 4 boys.
